Riot Games Unveils VCT 2027: A New Tournament-Driven Future for VALORANT Esports
TL;DR: Riot Games has announced a major evolution of the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) for 2027, introducing a tournament-based ecosystem with open qualification to global events, a new partnership model, and expanded live events across more locations worldwide.
LOS ANGELES – What you need to know:
- A Tournament-First Ecosystem: Starting in 2027, the VCT will transition to a tournament model where every match carries meaningful stakes. Open qualifiers will feed into regional tournaments, visiting more locations each year and providing opportunities to reach Masters and Champions.
- Open Qualification to Global Events: For the first time, any aspiring team can qualify for Masters and Champions through open qualifiers. Winning teams can advance directly to the biggest stages and have a path to financial rewards across prizing and digital goods.
- Tournaments will provide robust prize pools, totaling over $6M USD per year, as well as fully funded travel for global events.
- In 2025, Riot Games shared over $86M from digital goods with teams in the VCT.
- Introducing VCT Cups: Cups will replace traditional league play, acting as LAN-based tournaments that determine top teams in each region. These events will:
- Feature open qualification pathways
- Conclude with live finals in new cities
- Directly qualify teams to Masters and Champions
- Expanded Global Footprint: VCT 2027 will bring live esports events to more cities than ever before, with competitions spanning multiple locations per region, including international league hubs and roadshow finals.
- In total, the VCT will host over 20 tournaments each year, and visit more than 16 different cities all around the world
- New Two-Year Partnership Model: A refreshed partnership system will begin in 2027, featuring a two-year cycle and updated selection criteria. Partner teams will benefit from:
- Partner Base Payment - Partner teams receive a guaranteed base payment each year
- Performance Bonus - Partner teams that excel at partnership goals are eligible for additional rewards
- Team Capsules - In-game skins that let fans support their favorite teams
- Direct Seeding - Additional stability and increased exposure through direct placement into later rounds in qualifiers
“VCT 2027 is about reimagining how teams compete and how fans experience VALORANT esports. By shifting to a tournament-driven system with open access to our biggest events, we’re creating a more dynamic, high-stakes ecosystem where every match matters and every team has a shot at the global stage.”
Starting in 2027, all teams within the VCT will compete in a unified system and single tier of competition. This new structure removes the barriers for rising talent and creates a direct path for more teams to get to the top of the sport. The new VCT is designed to deliver:
- Higher stakes from the first match
- Faster progression to global stages
- More regional events
- Greater competitive opportunity
Open qualifiers will serve as the starting point for every team’s journey, with multiple qualification opportunities throughout the year. Teams can advance into regional tournaments, including Kickoff and the newly introduced Cups—LAN events that replace traditional league play and determine the top teams in each territory. From there, the best performers will qualify for Masters and Champions. This structure enables teams to make repeated runs at global events, adapt between competitive cycles, and build momentum over the course of the season.
Non-partnered teams will see expanded opportunities and support across the ecosystem, including:
- Cash incentives tied to qualification at each stage of competition
- Access to prize pools across regional and global events (totaling over $6M annually)
- Financial support for travel and participation in global events
- Faster, more consistent payout cycles to support team operations throughout the season
This model allows top-performing non-partner teams to compete for meaningful earnings across multiple events, and in some cases, outperform lower-ranked partner teams, while unlocking more consistent funding across the broader ecosystem.
Partner teams will continue to play a key role, entering competition in later stages through direct seeding while benefiting from financial stability and long-term support. A new two-year partnership cycle will begin in 2027, with continued benefits including base payments, performance bonuses, and digital goods revenue opportunities.
Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Commitment to Grow the VALORANT Community
- Community Resonance across Fandom and Content
- Business Sustainability and Responsible Operations
- Operational Excellence and Established Infrastructure
- Competitive Success and Performance Development
Additionally, Riot Games will significantly expand the global footprint of live events. The VCT will host more than 20 tournaments annually across 16+ cities worldwide, including regional Cups, international competitions, and global events. Each territory will host multiple LAN events throughout the season, bringing live VALORANT esports closer to fans than ever before.
More details on regional formats, qualification paths, and event locations will be shared in the lead-up to Champions.
